WeChat App: 3 Times when Chat History Backup Saves You from Hell

Have you been in a situation where you lost all the information you need? I've been with that scenario several times in my line of work which is teaching. I sometimes lost my students papers, other documents and worst, even a student’s grade. Even in simple case like accidentally losing all your contacts or other data on your mobile phone was simply devastating!

From that, I’ve learned my lesson. I always back up all my files whenever I can. There are times that we need to retrieve information – important or not. It’s because unlike good old hard copies, communications done digitally aren’t as easy to keep and store in boxes for safekeeping. For this, social mobile app WeChat acts as your digital notepad. Thanks to its Chat History Backup feature it saves conversation histories and restores them to any device for up to seven (7) days.

The simple 3-step process of WeChat’s Chat History Backup starts with selecting "Settings" > "General" > "Chat History Backup" and then clicking “Back Up” for the conversations you’d like to store.

Once you’ve saved your chats, you can protect them by setting a password.

To restore your conversations on any device, simply log on and tap “Restore” on the Chat History Backup window. The backed-up history will be restored to your device from the server.

Below is a rundown of several instances when this cloud storage solution by WeChat saves your ass from encounters wherein you need to refer to your information while on-the-go.

  1. Retrieving important dates
Birthdays, anniversaries, or just about any date set for yearly celebrations are vital details easily forgotten by the human brain. Give your spatial memory an instant boost by referring to conversation histories, which may contain reminders of these occasions. Chats with your sister could reveal her listing hole-in-the wall restaurants like 100 Revolving Restaurant in Quiapo or El Chupacabra in inconspicuous Polaris Street in Makati. Also, conversations with your best friend could remind you of the annual Art in the Park exhibit at Salcedo Village, which you’ve planned to go to together.

  1. Keeping lists
If you observe daily routines, it’s easy to spot how digital messages have long replaced the function of tactile Post-its and refrigerator notes. Lacking several things in the pantry? Your mom could’ve sent you a grocery list via WeChat. Receiving a huge package with separate parts of a bike? One quick check of your history could bring up a message from your dad with DIY instructions—helping you you assemble your gear just in time for your mountaineering trip to the dirt trails of Montalban and Camp Aguinaldo.

  1. Retrieving work exchanges
Aside from notebooks and emails, digital conversations with colleagues have also been reference points for work-related tasks. Missed out on an important detail relayed to you by your teammate over your WeChat group? No problem. Simply retrieve your file either on your desktop, work phone, or personal phone and proceed to finishing your task.

  32. I haven't tried WeChat, sa dami na kasi ng free messaging apps I figured I'll stick with Viber and then FB na lang for the rest. Pero okay talaga ang chat history. Meron nun sa Windows Live Messenger before and I used it a lot kasi sa work pag may mga tinatanong parang reference ko na rin tuloy. hehe. Kahit ngayon sa chat app namin sa office, pag may nahingi akong link dati tapos kailangan ko uli, retrieve ko lang yung old conversation.

  35. like Vera, I haven't tried WeChat. In my case I haven't tried any mobile messeging simply because my phone is not capable of these applications. Generation 1 pa ata ang phone ko hehehe... But I used web app messaging like YM and Skype. I really heavily on the backup history of these IMs to create my weekly timesheets :D
